Media Release – The Hon. Gayle Tierney MP
October 24th 2022
The Merri River School in Warrnambool is now officially open, thanks to the Andrews Labor Government.
Member for Western Victoria Gayle Tierney today visited the school to tour its new campus and learning facilities, which are already benefiting all students and staff at the site.
The school is the only special school in the area and services a 50-kilometre radial area of Warrnambool – with a population of around 35,000 residents.
A dedicated bus service transports students between home and school.
The Labor Government has invested $19.7 million for Merri River School to provide students and staff with the best possible facilities.
It includes $112,000 for a new accessible toilet to be built at the school, with its expected completion in early 2024.
There’s also been strong support for the school from the community, with locals raising more than $300,000 to fund playground equipment for the site.
In the past eight years, the Andrews Labor Government has invested $12.8 billion in building new schools and more than 1,850 school upgrades, creating around 17,400 jobs in construction and associated industries.
The Labor Government is now ahead of schedule in opening 100 new schools by 2026, with 75 new schools opening between 2019 and 2024 – ensuring every student can access a great local school and a quality education no matter where they live.
